ZineMonth2024: Mikhail Malkin

Mikhail Malkin, known online as Ronamis, is Kickstarting Fishbone Archipelago: Lost Lighthouse. It's a system-neutral adventure about surviving a shipwreck on an uncharted island.

Question: Give us the elevator pitch of your project. Tell us about it in two sentences or less.

Answer: You're a Castaway who survived a shipwreck on an Uncharted Island and your only way out is to please one of the Archipelago's Deities. You need to explore the locations, collect randomized cargo from the sunken ship and discover the fates of other castaways to progress in the story.

Q. Is this your first ZineMonth project or have you done it before? If it's your first, talk a bit about what inspired you to give it a shot this year. If you've done it before, what's something you've learned from previous crowdfunding projects that you may be doing differently this time, or, if you're not doing anything differently, talk a bit about your previous projects.

A. Indeed! I'm very excited, because it's my first ZineMonth and ZineQuest both as an indie-creator and as a supporter. You might have seen my illustrations back in 2021 ZineQuest on Eran Aviram's 'Menagerie of the Void' project, but that's as close as I've ever got to the event before. My greatest inspiration is to share Fishbone Archipelago - my fantasy swashbuckling setting I've been writing for years - with as many folks as possible. This adventure will be my first and very important step on this path. I want to learn the ropes and see how much stress and project management I can pull off on my own before I'll be able to announce the full Fishbone Archipelago campaign setting book crowdfunding.

Q. Finally, tell us something about your current project that really excites you but the average backer may not be aware of. Maybe a twist to an old trope, a new way of presenting something, or maybe just something you've never tried before that you're using this as an opportunity to try out.

A. Oh, yes! So, each time you play Lost Lighthouse you will be able to meet three other crew members that survived the shipwreck. There are six potential other NPC-Castaways in this zine beside PCs so the party will be different every time... but wait, there's more! You will have to roll each time you meet them to see what condition they are in - Ready and able? Possessed by a ghost? Already dead? You will get a new story twist every time! And off course the fact that this adventure is system agnostic makes it a great sandbox to test out new and exciting systems you've been supporting for some time. From a 3.5 veteran to 5E enjoyer and Cypher explorer to a MCDM rebel or a Black Flag supporter - Lost Lighthouse will be here to give you a place to play and have fun.
